More etsy stuff

I threw these together last weekend when we lost power. I'll be adding them to my etsy shop later today. Here is your sneak peek:

I made another gift card box.

And aren't these the cutest? I covered wood blocks (1 1/2 x 1 1/2) with different Christmas-y paper and painted PEACE with acrylic paint. I sprayed them with some acrylic sealant. I think I may make some for myself!

I painted the blocks, cut out the squares with my square punch (it was the perfect size), adhered them with mod podge, sanded the edges, and painted the letters.

Birthday Present

My niece is getting her room redecorated for her birthday so I thought I'd make her some decorated letters that spell out her name so that she has something new to hang on her wall.

I used the pressed wood letters from Hobby Lobby, and wouldn't you know it, they had a coupon for 1/2 off! The letters are about 10 inches high and and the width varies depending on which letter but most are around 6-8 inches wide. That's why I couldn't fit all of them in the same pictures.

Tools used:

wood letters
paper
mod podge
petaloo flowers
buttons
jewels
versamark embossing ink pad
clear embossing powder
purple chalk ink
handwriting background stamp
other clear acrylic stamps
purple glitter
ribbon
diamond stickles
perfect pearls
glimmer mist

I started by tracing the letters on paper then cutting the shapes out. I painted the letters with white and lilac acrylic paint and let dry. I coated each letter with a thin layer of mod podge and put the paper on top. It is important to keep smoothing out the paper or else you get air bubbles. I cut the excess paper around the edges with my exacto knife then sanded the edges smooth with my sanding block. Then it was time to start decorating.

First, the L...

I inked my handwritten background stamp with light purple chalk ink and inked the entire letter. I chalked a white flower with purple chalk and attached it with a purple buttong using glue dots. I ran a piece of purple ribbon through my xyron and attached at the bottom.

The letter E:

I used a different background stamp and inked with versamark embossing ink. Versamark is a clear ink and leaves a watermark effect (darkens the color of the paper). I covered with clear embossing powder, brushed off the excess, and hit it with the heat gun. It basically melts the embossing powder and leaves a glossy finish.  I filled in spaces here and there with diamond stickles giving the whole thing a slightly glittery and shimmery look. I covered the butterflies with versamark and used perfect pearls to give them a pearlesent look. Add some jewels and that letter is done!

Letter X:

This letter has a simple design. I used the design adhesives for the butterfly design. These were pretty easy to use. The design is sandwiched between two pieces of waxy paper. You simply peel off one side (carefully) and stick to your paper. You peel off the top sheet and just pour glitter on it. Brush off the excess and that's it! You can also use chalk or flock. I just added a few ribbons and that was it for X.

Letter Y:

I used acrylic stamps and inked with versamark. I used perfect pearls and just brushed over the inked surface and brushed off the excess. Add a few jewels and some ribbon and that letter was done.

I sprayed each letter with acrylic sealant instead of mod podge. That stuff was nasty but left a nice matte finish without the brush stroke that mod podge leaves behind. I was a little leery of using podge on the glitter butterflies.

Anyway, if I wasn't in such a rush to get them done I would have taken more pictures of the "process" but I think the written explanation does the job too! Overall it was a very inexpensive project. I had all of the supplies except the letters and the acrylic paint. I thihk I maybe spent $6 or $7 total.

Here is the birthday card I made for a friend. The original idea can be found in the latest issue of Scrapbooks, Etc.

Unplanned Crafting

I had lots to do planned today...but a 4 hour power outage pretty much scrapped my day (no pun intended). Luckily the rain cooled off the temps for a little bit so we were able to open the windows and not sweat to death. I busted out my rechargeable OttLite. It was so cloudy and rainy outside that translated into a dark house. Huz read the paper, little buddy played (and I introduced him to my fancy scissors that cut designs - not sharp!), and I made a birthday card, another gift card box, and started on some Christmas decorations that I'm going to list on my etsy page. Our original plan was to go swimming but I'll take crafting with my boy any day of the week!

I also moved most of my scrapping stuff downstairs while the Huz was mowing grass on Saturday. I know, I know. It's a little unfair to just move it but we discussed it back in April...I just think he thought I wasn't going through with it! It took him about 2 hours after coming inside to notice it. Pics will come later. I'm still waiting to get my new crafting table. To be fair we were both a little preoccupied. Our dog ran underneath LB's legs and flipped him over on his head. I know from personal experience that when the dog runs at full speed she hits HARD. She's almost knocked me over before.

He ended up being ok. He took a quick bath and went to bed. He woke up a few times in the middle of the night and I think he was definitely knocked pretty hard but he's a little trooper and was ok today.

I was going to take pics of my new projects and finish up the Christmas blocks after LB goes to bed but I think I'm just going to relax and finish up my season of Flash Forward. I know I'm a few years behind but I really haven't been able to watch tv in the past 3 years :). One of the reasons I love Netflix and their selection of television shows on their instant viewing option.

See something you like?

If the answer is YES then swing by my etsy shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/mylifeinpics

I spend a lot of time tinkering with new projects and trying out new techniques. Finally I thought what better way to get rid of the stuff I make (even though I'm absolutely in love with the the purple "be yourself" card and the gift card box) than to set up a shop and sell them!

Stop by and see what's in the shop. Subscribe to the RSS feed and you will automatically be notified when I put up new items.

And while you're at it...feel free to sign up and follow my blog.

What is it?

Actually, I'm not really sure yet. I'm thinking some sort of haunted house/Halloween decoration. Oh, how I heart Halloween! It is kind of hard to see but I even made the roof look like sparkly shingles.

Sneaky Sneaky

I'm so glad the weekend is here. It's been a horribly SLOW week at work until today, then everything went to hell. Anyway, all I could think about is getting home and doing nothing, which just happens to be my plan this weekend.

The huz has to work tomorrow so I'm going to clean, and I mean CLEAN, the house since I won't have to wait for him to wake up around 11:00. I'm also going to clean out the little guy's toys and put a lot in storage. And the sneaky part? I'm going to move my scrapbook stuff downstairs after I make room and purge toys and the huz has no idea. <Insert evil laugh here> Hey, he told me in April that I could bring the stuff down. I just don't think he thought I was serious about it :)

Now, if only I could sneak upstairs and work on a few projects. Little Buddy doesn't like it when I go up there for some odd reason. He tells me it is dangerous. All the more reason to move stuff to the main floor.

Mom's Cards

Mom made these cards at the scrapbook retreat a few weeks ago. I was so proud of her since she has NEVER made a card before. I think we got her hooked. :)

The pictures aren't the greatest but you get the point.

6 Years

It's been six years since my dad has died. At one point it seems like it hasn't been that long and other times it seems like it was a lifetime ago.

So much has changed in six years. I bought a house. My mom got cancer and kicked its ass after a long and hard battle. I had a son who is the most awesome kid I know.

I learned that life is too short to let most things bother me anymore. I learned that family are those people who have your back no matter what. I learned that I have the best friends I could ever ask for.

Life goes on and yet it doesn't.

I miss him.

Love ya dad.

Bathtubs and Playsets, Oh My!

It's been an interesting few days. First we found out that our tub has been leaking for a few weeks. After some trial and error, the huz finally figured out what was wrong it it. The bad news is that we'll most likely have to tear the bathroom apart next summer and fix it for good. We now just have a temporary fix and did what we could without tearing out walls.

Then he's been working on building a playset for little buddy (LB). Progress has been slow but the thing is huge so I suppose I shouldn't think it would take an afternoon to put together. One of the slides get delivered today (thanks, E!) so LB should get to play on it this evening.

I'm taking lots of pics of construction and I'll post them later.

I'm also working on building a paper mache haunted house to sell on my etsy page. Not quite sure what it will look like yet but I have some definite ideas.

Hope everyone is staying out of this horrible heat. I know I'll be doing my best to keep LB inside today but I'm sure that plan will go out the window as soon as E and mom get here today.

Til next time...stay cool!

Tour

Back in June we spent the weekend in STL. LB went to his very first baseball game. We also took a tour of Busch Stadium which I HIGHLY recommend. Now, I'm not a big baseball fan but...it. was. cool. Very cool. The huz was like a little kid.

Included in the tour:

-a trip to the field but we were given specific instructions to not touch the grass.
-a trip to the dugout. THE dugout. As in we could actually sit in the dugout.
-a trip through the inner workings and private, private clubs inside the stadium.

Our tour guide knew lots of Cardinals history. Once again...VERY cool and so worth the $10 per ticket.
